Keeping Air Travel Safe for Workers and Passengers Alike:
Transport Workers Union President Lauds FCC Proposal to Ban Inflight Voice Calls
Washington, D.C. — Following Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai’s announcement earlier this week that the FCC would support a ban on inflight voice calls on U.S. commercial airlines, Transport Workers Union of America International President Harry Lombardo issued the following statement:
“If the events of this week have made anything clear, it’s that we all must work together—legislators, employers, workers, and the traveling public—to make air travel as safe and comfortable as possible. The FCC’s announcement is a critical first step in recognizing the front-line efforts of flight attendants who work tirelessly to keep travelers secure in flight. In-flight calls represent an unnecessary and disruptive cabin atmosphere that can inhibit cabin safety, and prevent flight attendants from performing their necessary job duties. We call on the FCC and the FAA to move forward with this and other important measures, including banning knives in airplane cabins, and providing flight attendants with training to combat human trafficking.”
