Memorial Day originated as Decoration Day after the Civil War in 1868, when an organization of veterans in Illinois established it as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. Many TWU members participate in their communities by visiting military cemeteries and paying tribute to fallen Americans.
